A Ski Holiday in the Stunning Ore Mountains
The Ore Mountains are known for wooden nutcrackers and Christmas pyramids. Strolling through the lovely Christmas markets is also wonderfully relaxing. But the Ore Mountains are also a beautiful ski resort.
Mother Holle is kind to the enchanting mountain landscape between Saxony and Bohemia. If she happens to oversleep, snowmaking facilities ensure reliable snow cover across the entire Fichtelberg. Parts of the Ore Mountains also lie in Czech territory. One example is the 1,244 m-high KlĂnovec, with around 30 runs for leisurely and fast-paced skiing.

Oberwiesenthal is considered Germany’s highest-altitude town. It lies between KlĂnovec and the Fichtelberg. Famous winter sports athletes hail from Oberwiesenthal, including Jens WeiĂźflog and Silke Otto. Oberwiesenthal is probably the best-known ski resort in the Ore Mountains.
The Fichtelberg has 11 runs ranging from easy to difficult. Night skiing is also possible until around 9 p.m. The approximately 5 km-long toboggan run is great fun, too.
The beautiful Ore Mountains offer a varied ski holiday for young and old alike. It’s well worth exploring the vast forests and mountains—whether skiing, riding, sledding, hiking or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride.
For a pure adrenaline rush at speeds of around 80 kilometres per hour, take a ride on a racing sled in Altenberg, in the eastern Ore Mountains. The Altenberg bobsleigh and racing sled track is one of the most modern in the world. An experienced pilot is also on board the four-man bobsleigh.
Cross-country skiers will also find plenty to enjoy in the Ore Mountains. In the Vogtland, 36 kilometres of trails take beginners and experienced skiers alike through endless forests and remote mountain landscapes. The Kammloipe trail from Johanngeorgenstadt to Schöneck is a real challenge. A true cross-country skiing paradise! Johanngeorgenstadt, Klingenthal, Mühlleiten and Schöneck offer interesting culinary and cultural attractions to enjoy during a stay.
Auersberg, Carlsfeld and Sosa in the western Ore Mountains also currently offer ideal winter sports conditions in a wonderful ski area. It is one of Saxony’s most snow-reliable ski holiday destinations. The enchanting winter landscape promises a dream ski holiday, not just at Christmas.
