Karwendel: Family Ski Holiday and Freeride Paradise

Karwendel is the name of the mountain range between Lake Achensee, the Inn and the Isar. Most of the Karwendel Mountains lie in Tyrol, Austria. This Northern Limestone Alps range includes 125 peaks over 2,000 metres. At over 2,700 m, the Bikkarspitze is the highest peak in the Karwendel.

From Stanserjoch by Lake Achensee, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. The 360° vista stretches across the entire Inn Valley and, on a clear day, reaches far into Tyrol’s Oberland region. The Karwendel mountain scenery is truly beautiful.

The varied Karwendel ski area has something for every ability level. Beginners and families will find suitable slopes on the Kranzberg. The northern runs are generally quiet, with slopes ranging from intermediate to easy. You can also bypass the black run, which is not particularly difficult, by taking a red run.

Night skiing under the floodlights at the Luttenseelift is very popular, as are the cosy mountain huts and après-ski bars. The sunny terraces are also perfect for relaxing. Little skiers can enjoy the children’s park, with its magic carpet, rope tow and children’s ski carousel.

It’s a different story across the way in the Dammkar. Here, it’s all about action. Expert skiers will find ideal runs, and it’s an insider tip for freeriders. Snowboarders and freeriders flock to the 7 km Dammkar descent, especially since the moguls and deep snow are no longer groomed. Dammkar is considered Germany’s first freeride area.

The Karwendel region is only about an hour’s drive from Munich. Innsbruck is just 36 km away, and the Garmisch ski area is only 18 km away. It’s easy to take a quick trip to other ski resorts.
