World Masters Ski Championships
The slopes will be ablaze in Austria’s Tyrol region. Around 170 German senior skiers will compete for victory at the World Masters Championships starting February 9. The event will be held at Reither Kogel in Reith, in Tyrol’s Alpbach Valley. Reith is in the Kufstein district. The neighboring valleys are Wildschönau and the Zillertal.

The ski race lasts two days, through February 10, 2008. It is one of the most important qualifying races for the World Masters Ski Championships in Styria at the end of March. On February 9, two slalom runs are scheduled to start at Reither Kogel at around 9:30 a.m. The highlight follows on February 10 with the giant slalom. In 2007, a racer born in 1923 actually took part.
Youth culture has no place here. The term “senior” will need a new definition. Female and male ski racers will showcase their skills with daring downhill runs. The oldest racer at the championships is 85 years old. Even so, he has more stamina and speed than many young skiers.
The Alpbach Valley ski area, with 52 km of slopes, lies at an altitude of 600 m–2,100 m. It is divided into two ski areas. Impeccably groomed runs are suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. Wiedersberger Horn is the larger area, with 15 ski lifts and 2 mountain gondola lifts. The smaller area in Reith is popular for family ski holidays. Sun-drenched, wide slopes reach almost to the heart of the mountain village. Skiing here is fun at any age.
