Advent Romance in Alpbachtal

Rattenberg is probably the smallest town in Austria. It lies in the Alpbachtal in Tyrol. It is well worth a visit in winter, too. Rattenberg’s Advent event, held on Saturdays in the run-up to Christmas, is one of Tyrol’s most popular attractions. It has been held every year for 10 years.

Advent in Rattenberg, Tyrol

Advent in Rattenberg, Tyrol, is captivating and contemplative. The stress of Christmas and the shopping frenzy in overcrowded stores feel a world away. Countless candles glow in the windows. The romantic light of open fires and torches enchants the town’s medieval appearance. This special atmosphere evokes memories of Christmas as it once was. Romance instead of skiing in Rattenberg.

During Advent in Tyrol, Rattenberg has no Christmas market stalls, but instead offers stalls selling regional delicacies. The old town is also home to both contemporary and traditional glass art. Beautifully decorated shops stay open later on Advent Saturdays. Artistic performances featuring woodturning, arts and crafts, an exhibition of paintings, and children’s activities such as baking and glassblowing Christmas baubles begin at 2 p.m.

The “Star Trail” children’s program starts at 2:30 p.m. with fairy-tale romance and games from the Middle Ages. Storytelling, treasure hunts in the legendary enchanted forest, pony rides, a petting zoo, and old-fashioned games delight young and old alike.

The main program follows at 5 p.m., with a parade of drummers and fire artists. The warm glow of flames, free from artificial lighting, creates a particularly romantic atmosphere.

Deep-snow slopes and ski runs in the Alpbachtal

Many deep-snow slopes and ski runs in the Alpbachtal remain pristine and untouched. There are 45 kilometers of groomed pistes, while another 8 kilometers are marked and secured only. With these natural routes, the Alpbachtal is one of the most beautiful ski areas in western Austria.
