Winterberg: Junior Luge World Cup

The German uplands, and above all the Sauerland, are reporting the start of the winter season and plenty of snow as early as mid-November 2007. Almost simultaneously, international competitions get underway at the Sauerland region’s superbly equipped winter sports venues. This opens an exciting season of international winter sports competitions in Winterberg.
The luge season in Winterberg, for example, begins with the Junior Luge World Cup on November 23–24, 2007. A total of 150 athletes from 21 nations will compete on the Winterberg ice track. The Winterberg ice track is one of the fastest luge tracks in the world.

The Junior Luge World Cup is hosted by the Bobsleigh and Luge Club (BRC) Hallenberg. The region is proud to see two young local talents take part. Former junior world champion Madeleine Teuber has already won two bronze and two gold medals at World Cup events in recent years. Peter Panzek (both from BSC Winterberg) competes in the A-youth category. He is getting his first taste of international competition, but the coaches believe he has great potential too. The leading nations in luge include Germany, the USA, Italy, Austria and Latvia.

Other highlights of the 2007/2008 winter season will be the Viessmann Luge World Cup, from December 3 to 9, 2007, and the International VELTINS Cup at the Viessmann FIBT World Cup Bobsleigh & Skeleton, from February 4 to 10, 2008.
Visitors can also get actively involved at the Winterberg bobsleigh and luge track. For example, anyone who wants to hurtle down the track at 120 km/h can do so in a “taxi bobsleigh”—of course, only outside the actual competitions.
