Eagle Trail – Hiking in the Tyrolean Ski Region
The Eagle Trail gets its name from the flight of the eagle that takes off from Kufstein toward the Kaiserwinkl. Like the Eagle Trail, the eagle’s flight passes through the gentle valleys of the Kitzbühel Alps. The 280 km-long Eagle Trail runs from the Tyrolean lowlands, starting at St. Johann, past numerous alpine pastures in the Kaiserwinkl, the Wilder and Zahmer Kaiser mountains, and then through the Brandenberg Alps.
The main route of the Eagle Trail leads in 8 stages to the Zillertal Alpine glaciers. Moorland, glacial lakes and eternal ice accompany hikers in the Stubai Alps. The route passes through the Karwendel and Rofan mountains and the Lechtal Alps to St. Anton am Arlberg. The magic of Tyrol’s mountain world unfolds for hikers along the Eagle Trail.
This idyllic landscape is best known to skiers and snowboarders during the winter season. But in summer, hiking enthusiasts are treated to an equally fascinating mountain panorama. Imst, known for its mild climate, is the hub for these sections of the Eagle Trail. From here, the main route leads into the challenging mountain country of the Kaunertal. Alternatively, head to the Ötztal with its glaciers rising above 3,000 metres, or the Pitztal with its romantic alpine pastures, mountain lakes and rushing streams. The Eagle Trail also offers delightful hiking routes in the Tannheimer Tal and Paznaun, including the mountain village of Galtür.
The Eagle Trail is very well organised, with trail markers and detailed descriptions. It is almost impossible to get lost here. Tyrol’s magnificent and varied mountain world offers every kind of hiking route for every type of hiker. The Eagle Trail runs through the entire region. It is safe and offers breathtaking panoramic views. It also helps visitors get to know the people and the land.
