German skiers love Austria

By far the most popular ski holiday destination for German winter holidaymakers is Austria. Nearly 80% give Austrian Ischgl, St. Anton, KitzbĂĽhel, the Stubai Valley or the Arlberg absolute preference over other ski countries in Europe. This is surely also because KitzbĂĽhel is home to the best-looking ski instructors, closely followed by St. Anton. Swiss ski resorts rank second in popularity, followed by German and Italian ski regions, which share third place. For now, however, this applies primarily to trips lasting several days.

Popular winter holidays: skiing and wellness

Among ski holidaymakers from Germany, skiing and wellness offers are preferred to partying; only 15% seek out the party scene. Singles, however, are in their element at après-ski, where flirting over Jagertee and mulled wine is the order of the day. The younger you are, the more après-ski appeals. As people get older, partying after a day of winter sports becomes less and less popular.

The downsides of ski holidays: crowded slopes, speed demons and pushy people

The biggest dampener on the enjoyment of a ski holiday is the overcrowding on the slopes, which starts soon after the first lifts begin running. The only solution is to get up early, but most ski fans are willing to do that. Another drawback of ski holidays is reckless snowboarders and skiers, as well as people pushing in at the ski lifts.

A short break in the snow

The Alps are close by for German ski holidaymakers, and you can also set off on a ski holiday at short notice. The Alpine ski resorts are also snow-sure. People often head to nearby ski regions on a spur of the moment. Alongside the weather, cost is a reason for taking fewer short trips. Travel and ski-pass costs make up the largest part of skiers’ budgets for last-minute ski holidays or short breaks. Short breaks and day trips are also popular with families. The low mountain ranges are popular too. The little ones love sledding. The Harz, Sauerland and Ore Mountains attract many day-trippers.
