The 2010/2011 ski season is well underway at ski resorts across Europe: many holidaymakers have already been on a ski holiday, while others are still planning one. Anyone wishing to travel to ski resorts in Austria and Switzerland to ski from February 2011 should remember that, in addition to skis, warm clothing and a good mood, there are other preparations to make for a ski holiday.
Using motorways in Austria and Switzerland
This means the vignettes that must be purchased to use motorways in Austria and Switzerland. Holidaymakers who were in Austria or Switzerland last year must also remember to get a new vignette, as the old ones are valid only until 31 January 2011. New vignettes become valid on 1 February 2011. These vignettes must be affixed to the inside of the car windscreen when travelling for a ski holiday in Switzerland or Austria. To avoid unnecessary and frustrating fines, remember to buy a new vignette from 1 February 2011 if you are travelling in either country on or after that date.

Vignettes for ski holidays: price increase in Austria
The price of vignettes in Austria will increase slightly from February 2011. This year, an annual vignette for Austria costs €76.50 instead of €76.20, the price last year—an increase of 30 cents. A two-month vignette costs €23. For a short ski holiday in Austria, a 10-day vignette costing €7.90 is usually sufficient. Swiss vignettes, which are valid for 12 months, cost €31.50, the same as last year.
Where can you buy vignettes for a ski holiday? There are several ways to buy a vignette: you can purchase the relevant vignette from the ADAC in advance, or buy one at a petrol station before the border while travelling to your ski destination.
