Top Ski Area in the Zillertal
The Zillertal ski region in Tyrol is enormous! Skiers can enjoy over 600 km of slopes and around 180 ski lifts, as well as around 200 km of cross-country trails. The Zillertal’s après-ski options are just as varied. There’s everything from cozy mountain huts to exclusive restaurants, as well as one of Austria’s most extreme descents, with a 78 percent gradient. Skiing here becomes an adventurous challenge.
Family-friendly Spieljoch lies at an elevation of 550–2,050 m. This wonderful ski area offers 21 km of immaculately groomed easy and intermediate slopes. It’s away from the noise of through traffic, yet still easy to reach.

The extensive Hochfügen ski area, at an elevation of 1,500–2,500 m, offers 155 km of slopes. The toboggan run is lit every day until midnight. Night skiing is possible on Thursdays between 8 and 10 pm. There’s plenty on offer, from cozy Tyrolean inns and après-ski bars to restaurants awarded three toques. Free ski buses are available, so it’s worth leaving the car behind.
The Zillertal Arena, which reaches an elevation of 2,500 m, has modern cable cars and lifts. It offers over 160 km of top-groomed slopes for all ability levels. A free ski bus is available. The village of Gerlos is right next to the ski area and is famous for its après-ski. The ski arena has romantic villages with a cozy mountain-hut atmosphere: Hippach, Krimml, Königsleiten, Wald and Zell. Kids also have plenty of fun in the ski schools’ fairy-tale settings.
Mayrhofen ski area has received many awards. It reaches an elevation of 2,500 m. Its over 150 km of slopes include the arguably steepest descent in Austria (78%), “Harakiri.” The Vans Penken Funpark is popular with snowboarders and freeriders. It’s considered one of the best in the Alps.
Zillertal 3000, which reaches an elevation of around 3,250 m, offers 227 km of slopes across four ski areas: Eggalm, Penken, Rastkogel and Hintertux Glacier. Hintertux Glacier is the only ski area in Austria to offer fantastic slopes all year round. The breathtaking panoramic views take in the Dolomites, Großglockner and Zugspitze.
