International Ski Federation (FIS) is seriously considering the main square of Moscow as the venue for World Cup ski races in the 2011-2012 season.
The fact that FIS is seriously considering the main square of Moscow as a possible sports arena for the ski race was announced by Jürg Kapol, the head of the FIS department for competitions in cross country skiing. Apart from Moscow, another venue for ski sprint could become the capital of Italian fashion, the city of Milan.
According to Jürg Kapol, whose interview is provided by fasterskier.com portal, Red Square is one of three candidate places of the Russian capital to hold ski competitions. The representative of FIS said that any international ski sprint competition, which takes place in a large city, is usually organized in its center. Red Square today meets the requirements of FIS and is considered as a possible candidate. In total FIS considers three places in different parts of Moscow for organizing the Cup race.
Russian and Italian Ski Federations have sent applications to the FIS for organizing ski competitions in their largest cities. It is worth noting that Jürg Kapol has already inspected Milan, which offered to conduct competitions in the park in the city center. FIS representatives were satisfied with the opportunities of Milan, despite the fact that the proposed route of the race will take place on relatively flat areas, without level differences. The organizers of the future ski sprint in Milan are experienced professionals, who conducted similar race at Val di Fiemme resort.
As for Moscow, FIS has not finally decided about the venue for the race. According to the representatives of FIS Russia before hosting the World Cup the city should demonstrate the possibility of organizing a competition of lower class. Thus, representatives of the Federation want to see test races to be guaranteed in a high level of organizing World Cup in the Russian capital.
Similar requirements FIS addressed to Quebec. Canada also expects to host a World Cup sprint of the 2011-2012 season. However, organizers must demonstrate a willingness to receive the elite of skiing by organizing lower class cross-country skiing races. Thus, FIS specialists will be able to check the quality of tracks in Quebec.
