A famous Canadian ski resort Sun Peaks situated in British Columbia is to be opened this year a week earlier than it was scvheduled. Due to heavy snowfalls in the previous days that had brought about 50cm of fresh power an upper snow depth at the moment is 73.3cm and mid-mountain snow depth now totals about 56cm. The weather forecast for the coming weekend is also favourable – another 10-15 cm of frewsh snow is expected.
Thus, the resort’s management made a decision to open this year on the November 14 instead of the November 21. Jamie Tattersfield, Mountain Operations Manager at Sun Peaks, commented: "This is the earliest we have seen conditions like this. To take advantage of this gift, we are going to move the planned opening day up to November 14. We aim to open as many lifts and runs as possible.”
Meanwhile, in the Western part of the country The Canada Olympic Park located near Calgary in Alberta province already launched new season. Other local ski rerorts situated in Alberta and British Columbia also have informed of heavy snowfalls. For instance, Mount Norquay at located Banff is going to open at the Halloween weekend, i. e. in a couple of days. Nakiska and Marmot Basin ski resorts are likely to launch the season within the next several weeks.
In the USA winter is also speeding over ski areas. Thus, Loveland in Colorado that has already been open for three week received more fresh power and now is able to open more terrains positioning it as a "Halloween treat". Arapahoe Basin also already functions at the moment but currently cannot provide terrain for beginners. And the neighbouring Keystone is scheduled to open by the end of the next week.
