Already five new ski tracks will be introduced in the current ski region in the Andorran region of GrandValira. The length of the new tracks is 12 kilometers. Thus, the total length of the ski tracks in GrandValira will grow up to 205 kilometers. Among the ski resorts of the Pyrenees no one has exceeded this figure except Grandvalira.
From the 200 miles of tracks in GrandValira snowmaking machines are installed on 124 kilometers of tracks, according to the official website of the resort - grandvalira.com. Thus even in the case of temperature fluctuations the resort guests will be able to use prepared slopes.
GrandValira is a combined ski area in Andorra, which consists of several small resorts: Canillo, Soldeu, Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig and Encamp. Region’s tracks are located at an altitude of 2,600 meters. During the last few years GrandValira has gained a reputation one of the best ski resorts in Europe for beginners.
This season, in addition to the new tracks, the visitors of GrandValira can t also can expect high international-level competitions. Thus, in Soldeu will be held the Downhill World Cup (11-12 February 2012), and in Pas de la Casa - Flying Kilometre Speed Skiing World Cup (25-26 February 2012).
Season opening in GrandValira will be held at the end of this week, on 26-27 November 2011 a week before the scheduled date. However, condition of snow at the resort is still far from ideal. The the upcoming start of the season, as planned by the resort administration, will be a test before the high ski season, which in Andorra and Spain falls on the first half of December. It is planned to improve the snow cover on the slopes of the Pyrenees. In GrandValira are hoping for heavy snowfalls, which would help the snow-making machines to create the necessary level of snow on the tracks.

I'm going to Soldeu on the 19th December, any news on potential opening dates? How useful would the snow machines be without a heavey downpour of snow?
