Aspen Skiing Co, operator of one of the most popular ski resorts in USA, Aspen, reported that the current ski season will be closed for two weeks later than usual. The extension of the ski season in the main winter resort of Colorado has become possible thanks to sustained cold temperatures, which dominated on a resort the whole march, and the excellent quality of snow cover.
Initially, Aspen authorities planned to arrange the official closing of the season 2009-2010 on April 11, 2010. However, suitable weather conditions allowed postponing the closing date to April 24-25.
At the same time, the precedent of the late end of the season in Aspen Mountain is noted at the resort for the third year on end. This year the main peak of the resort - Ajax Mountain - received about 30 inches of snow due to snowfalls, which took place at a resort on Easter Eve week. The second peak of the resort - Snowmass - received about 25 inches of snow through the same heavy snowfall, which happened in these places on Tuesday 30 March.
Nevertheless, as reported by Canadian Press, the continuation of the ski season will be possible not at all the slopes of Aspen. Longer season will be normal only in the area of Aspen Mountain. Ski slopes in the area of Aspen Highlands are closed since April 4, but trails in the region of Buttermilk are preparing to close on April 11, 2010. Since the closure the trails in these regions will no longer be serviced by lifts.
To date, the ski season in Colorado closed on a number of well-known resorts. Tracks of such resorts as Beaver Creek, Eldora and Keystone are virtually ceased to receive ski tourists. At the same time in some places the season is still ongoing. This is the Durango Mountain Resort, which routes will be open for skiing holidays throughout the weekend in April. Such resorts as Vail and Silverton are going to announce the official closing on 18 April 2010, reports aspendailynews.com portal.
