One of the highest mountains in Europe, Elbrus which is 5,642 metres high, gives a great hope for skiers and snowboarders. It seems to be the only place that doesn’t suffer from climate changes. On the contrary in the recent years lower temperatures in winter and heavier snowfalls were noticed there by the glaciologists from Russia.
In the last 10 years 7 winters of 10 were very snowy and cold. Alexander Oleinikov, an avalanche specialist says that the winter temperatures become lower due to some of climatic effects taking place in the region that are really hard to explain.
Elbrus has never been popular ski resort among the skiers of Europe but its position has recently been reconsidered. It has even been chosen as an additional location for Winter Olympic Games in 2014 in case Krasnaya Polyana fail to play host to Winter Olympic Games 2014 due to climate changes.
There are two peaks in Elbrus that differ slightly. The western one is 5,642 and the eastern peak is 5,621 metres high. These peaks are covered with snow and their glaciers are the sources of many mountain rivers that run during summer.
