Skijoring

Skijoring is a sport originated in Scandinavia. A horse or from one to three dogs are hitched directly to a skier. In recent times, the horse is substituted ever by a car, motorcycle or snowmobile. The racetrack will be on an open field or, if present, on a frozen lake.

Several teams compete against each other. The winner is the one who is the first and still standing on the skis. The championships are already held at the regional and national level even outside Scandinavia.

Since Skijoring originally comes from Scandinavia, the most events are also found here. Those who spend their winter vacations in Norway will surely wish to be a spectator of such race. But Skijoring can also be found in alpine ski resorts as it’s an increasingly popular sport, and even clubs are already found.

If someone wants to try it in his winter resort, the contacts can be found in the local ski clubs. For beginners, it is advisable to begin with a horse riding, as the skiers will not have to take care of driving the horse. Basic experience as a skier should already exist. Of course, one must not necessarily race. With a draft horse there can be a good cross-country tour.

A fun for dog-lovers is the North American version of the Skijoring born, in one to three dogs for the skiers. Those who have a sporting dog can safely drive it according to his wishes. Who wishes to exercise with their own horse or dog the best way is to enter Skijoring ski or sled dog clubs.
