One of the most popular winter sports in Germany is skating. Even in 13th and 14th centuries people thought over the idea of moving fast on the ice, and when the solution was found it soon became an extremely popular entertainment in northern Europe.

Typical areas where this winter sport is exercised, are the south of Bavaria, Tyrol and Switzerland, there are also the traditional annual events out, for example, to the centre of Munich.

But ice skating is no longer just a leisure activity, it has been for many years an extremely popular professional sports, and the annual competitions are held all over the world. The most famous race is held every four years and is called the winter Olympics, but there is also the world championships which offer a great venue for the ice-skating athletes.

Ice skating is popular not only among the professionals but even the real laymen can find it easy to do. The most important equipment for the beginners is, of course, skates which are better to be bought in a specialized trading centre. The first training can be in a nearby skating hall or on frozen lakes. In order to be physically prepared one has to do jogging in summer to strengthen his body, especially legs. A winter vacation in a typical skating region can be a successful winter tour then. The ski huts are particularly cozy as a holiday home or accommodation. The popularity of ice-skating is adopted by many winter resorts which allow even beginners to learn the winter sport with no stress at all. Besides, ice-skating makes your holiday a wonderful winter vacation.
