Bormio, one of the most renowned wintersports resorts in Italy, is situated closely to Switzerland at the foot of the Stilfserjochs. The over 2000 year old health resort is situated at a basin valley between the majestic mountains of the Ortler group. Bormio is particularly well-known as the venue for the alpine ski world championship in 1985 and 2005. In addition, the world cup race at the famous "Stelvio" descent takes place here between Christmas and New Year's.
